IN SCIENTIFIC TERMS, Stress refers to the reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our physical or mental stability. This is a broad definition that can encompass a lot. The funny thing about stress is that it is subjective. What may be a stressful situation for one person may be a breeze for another.

Don’t fret, the best of about stress is that it can be managed. You can save yourself from the embarrassments, the apologies and the wounds associated with antagonistic reactions to anxiety by learning how to manage it effectively.

Focus Intensely

The best thing for you to do at the onset of a stressful situation is to focus. Don't speak, but focus. If you must respond, say as little as possible and try to control your tone. Speak softly and slowly. Therefore if you are responding to a person or a group of people at the time, the event will not turn into a confrontational one. The goal here is to organize of your mind and the thoughts that are running through it. You can do this by meditating. Meditation can be done almost anywhere. You don't have to go sit in the middle of the floor with your legs crossed and your eyes close, but you must get to a quiet place where you can be to yourself. Try pairing with a meditative mat and then start counting until you feel a sense of calmness. If you prefer to close your eyes, do so. As you count, visualize the number in your mind. For example, count in this manner, 1, 2, 3- 1. As you think of the number, project a mental picture of it. This will cause you to focus further, pushing out other distractions from your consciousness.

Keeping a Journal

If meditation is not your thing try documenting what you feel. All you need is a piece of paper (any will do) and a writing utensil. If you prefer to type your feelings you can do so on your computer or the note pad on your phone. Journaling is effective because it allows you to get things off your chest and your mind without lashing out at the people around you. There are no rules to journaling. You can say what you want, how you want. And since this document is for you only, you don't have to worry about offending anyone or politically correct. Just write until you get it all out.

Music Therapy

Losing yourself in the right music is an immediate and effortless way to reframe your situation. Music has a way of transforming your mind. It can be used to energize, motivate or relax you. More research is emerging on music therapy and its effects on pain management, stress, behavior disorders and even Autism but you don't need a formal study to validate it effectiveness. Use music to your own advantage. For example, try listening to some smooth jazz or classical music to calm your mind and cultivate inner peace.
